MAIN SIGHTS

  • ROMAN AMPHITHEATRE

A stage for gladiatorial battles, with room for 14,000 people. It was built near the sea to recreate even more spectacular tournaments. The arena could be flooded and sea battles could be recreated. At one end of the arena are the foundations of a basilica built in the 5th century in honor of the first martyrs, the bishop and the two deacons of the city, brutally tortured and burned alive in 259 in front of a crowd.

  • ROMAN CIRCUS

Fragments of the Circus in Taraco, built during the reign of Emperor Domitian, have been preserved from the Flavian era.

  • THE PALACE OF PILATE (EL PRETORIO)

In the center of “Roman Tarragona” is the Royal Square, in the past it housed the Aragonese king. Today, the rich collection of the Archaeological Museum is preserved in a fairly good state.

  • TARAGON CATHEDRAL

The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The construction of the temple continued around two hundred years, from the 12th to the 14th century, so its facade is dotted with Romanesque and Gothic elements. The interior decoration is magnificent, most of the images are dedicated to St. Thecla, the patron saint of the city.

  • BALCONY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

The ancient city is located on a hill about 40 meters above the Mediterranean coast. From the built terrace called “Balcony of the Mediterranean” you can enjoy some amazing views of the sea, the city and the Roman amphitheater.
